87 Mirage engine oil leaking

Jan 23, 2004 1 Replies

The car is an 87 MItsubishi Mirage sedan with 1.5L engine and auto trans. It has 140k on the clock and the engine smokes a little bit. Recently there has developed a bad engine oil leak between the engine and the trans bellhousing. the leaking is too bad to keep driving. oil leaking starts after engine is started. I replaced oil pan gasket but the problem remains the same. So now it looks like the rear main seal. My questions:

  1. Could it be something else or just main seal?
  2. Is removing transmission difficult by a handy DIY? Are special tools needed?
  3. How many labor hours are usually charged by a shop for replacing a rear main seal?

Thank you guys in advance!

Charles

I would check the valve cover gaskets before I went right for the rear main seal. It probably is the rear main, but one could hope for the easier fix.
