'96 Buick Lesabre starts and dies

I have a friend with a '96 Lesabre that is having an aggravating issue where the car sometimes will start, run a couple of seconds and die out. It only does it when it is in the mood and sometimes after a few try's it will start and runs like normal. It left him stranded the other night and wouldn't start but when towed in it started fine. No codes stored.

So the car starts runs a couple seconds and dies. If it starts it runs perfectly. He is thinking it may be related to the security key feature but neither of us knows how that feature would work on this car. If the security key was not working would the car crank at all? Would it start and die or would it start and run a couple of minutes and die? Any other common things that would cause this problem? The mass airflow sensor has already been replaced a couple of times. Right now the car is still sitting with his mechanic but it is working fine so mechanic doesn't know what to do.....

Bud, there are so many things that can go wrong in these vehicles. Friend needs a competent diagnosis. Dealerships are not necessarily the places to find competent workmen.
