Adjustable temperature cooling system thermostat??

Hi all. Whenever I install a new thermostat, which not that often actually, it only ever seems to work properly for a few months or so and then drift down to a colder opening temperature. This has been on a variety of different cars. My current ride sits at about 69 deg C where the water exits the motor, at a steady 100 kmh at say 18 degC ambient. Is about 5 deg hotter during slower stop/start driving.

I think I remember seeing a thermostat that had a small adjusting screw that was presumably set by the manufacturer to calibrate the opening temperature. If I get one of these next time, if - or rather when :-( it goes out of calibration, maybe I can just pull it out and give it a bit of a tweak with a small screwdriver in a pot of hot water along with a thermometer.

Does anyone here know about these kind of thermostats? Any experiences?

GP.

never heard of anything like that. I really doubt they exist.

However, you can get an adjustable fan switch to vary the temp that the cool |Hi all. | Whenever I install a new thermostat, which not that often |actually, it only ever seems to work properly for a few months or so |and then drift down to a colder opening temperature. No experience, but it does ring some bells in my memory.

You can get an adjustable thermostatic control for the electric fans certainly. Hayden or Imperial might be names to search.

Well, yeah, but that will only adjust the temp of the coolant in the rad, not in the block.

Hey, Stephen. Would not the temperature of the radiator coolant directly affect the temperature of the block as the rad. coolant flows into & displaces the block coolant? HTH & good luck. sdlomi

Not until the thermostat says so.

Thanks, but that will not fix the problem. At highway speeds if the water is too cool and the fans are already off then all I can do is restrict the water flow via the thermostat somehow.

I suppose I could partially block the radiator air path. Don't really like that approach though...

Look at some Midget/Silver Crown/ Modified parts websites. I've seen valves in the water outlet on some of these cars. It's operated by the throttle-I think.
