Arco gas? (2025 Update)

I know this much for certain.There is an Exxon gas station near me.More than more than a few years ago, I used to buy gas there for my 1978 Dodge van.It got to where my van was running lousey.I looked inside of the carburetor.There was some blush greenish mossy looking stuff inside of the carburetor.Every since then, I stay far away from Exxon (Chevron too) gas and I have no more problems concerning gasoline.I won't even buy those brand names of gas for my little walk behind lawn mower. cuhulin

No, Shell's 93 does in fact have more detergents than their other grades.

It isn't about the miles per gallon; it's all about the cents per mile.

You have to normalize using that method, because of fluctuations in gas prices among brands. One brand may be more expensive to buy, but it may or may not be more expensive to run.

No, premium means higher octane, meaning more of the components that slow down the burn and avoid pinging. Some engines run better on higher octane, and some get higher mileage. Some don't. I was trying to figure out if mine did.

You have fooled yourself into believing that "premium gas" equals "better" and so you THINK the car "feels slightly better".

So Shell's Top Tier fuels contain "more than twice the amount of detergents" required by law while their V-Power--which, unfortunately, comes only in 90-93 octane depending on where you live--contains "more than five times the amount of cleaning agents" required by law.

So the fact is, you can't provide a link or ANYTHING from Shell that says, "same great cleaning in all gasoline grades".

A few months ago when fuel prices were very high I was filling up and an acquaintence pulls into the station. We exchanged comments about the prices and he says that it's especially bad because he had to fill with premium this time. I asked why and he said that he had a smog test scheduled in a few days and the premium would help ensure passing the test! I just turned back to my task without saying a word.

knock sensors are generaly there to retard ignition in the event that a premium tuned car is filled with regular. protection the other way around is not required, so what you're experiencing is probably ignition that's /too/ retarded relative to the gasoline combustion rates, hence smoother [lower yield] power strokes. and lower gas mileage.

The signs on the pumps in Shell stations frequently said that up until their most recent ad campaign. I think some marketeer decided to insinuate a difference between premium and regular/mid-grade with the latest campaign.

Nor can you find anything that QUANTIFIES any difference between Shell regular and premium detergent percentages. In case you didn't notice "more than twice" and "more than five times" are hardly quantitative, and since "more than five times" is actually a subset of "more than twice," it doesn't even prove that there's a difference other than marketing!!!

I've used Shell gas for some time now, and every collateral on top of every pump has extolled the difference in detergents with their 'v-power'.

I've never seen anything from Shell indicating "all grades, same cleaners!".

Sure. More than 2x what the law specifies for their non-v-power stuff, and more than 5x what the law specifies for v-power.

It starts with what the law says. The law quantifies it for you.

er, why don't /you/ do some homework for a change? all you're doing here is pissing and moaning, but i don't see you contributing a damned thing. go figure out what the detergents are and the legal minimum. then report back with your findings.

The law quantifies only the minimum. "More than " is NOT quantitative.

And I'm not sure I even believe that the law PLACES a minimum on detergent content, come to think of it!

Its plain what you are BELIEVING, not what they are saying.

If both grades contain 6x the "minium required", then BOTH statements ("regular contains more than twice," "premium contains more than 5x") are QUITE true. And also QUITE irrelevant.
