What happens when you put DOT1 brakefluid in a car that should take DOT4? It is a '84 BMW 318.

I don't think you can even buy DOT1, never seen such stuff. I assume you ment DOT3. DOT3 and DOT4 are compatible, the difference is DOT3 has a lower boiling point. The consquences will be brake fade, *IF* you get the brakes hot enough. In regular street usage that is not likely.
I don't think there are any differences in corrosion protection, etc DOT3 vs DOT4, just the dry and wet boiling points being lower for DOT3.
If it bothers you, just flush the system with DOT4.
just don't use DOT 5, DOT 5 is NOT compatible with 3 or 4
DOT 1 doesn't exist, but you knew that
