CA Smog Legal Mustang Engine Mods?

I'm about to start an extensive (expensive) restoration on my '84 GT. I want to put aftermarket headers, ignition and maybe a carb. What (if any) choices do I have as to how far I can go and still remain legal? This car has no computer, EFI and the stock carb is a Holly

600 (I think). It came with single exhaust (1 cat and a pre-cat on one side) and I want to install dual exhaust with 2 cats. Is this acceptable? I just want the thing to pass smog so I can drive it again...it's been 5 years in my garage!

You might have a problem with the dual cats. The idea of funneling everything through the two cats in series is to maintain a high temperature in the cats. Running the cats in parallel lowers the temperature of each and this affects their efficiency. John
