Cost of brake job all four brakes?

I have a 2000 Mazda Protege ES with 105k miles on it

Can someone give me a rough estimate what it will cost me to have ALL four brakes rebuilt by a mechanic?

That price can vary a LOT, depending on - >which< mechanic does the job, - what parts he uses and how much he marks them up, - whether drums or discs, cylinders or calipers, must be rebuilt or replaced

etc...

Mechanics here, whether dealership or independent, charge a flat $60 per hour labor. In bigger cities, it may be closer to $100.

Front pads run about $40-70 for the good quality ones from NAPA. A mechanic will mark them up.

Rear shoes will run $20-35 roughly from NAPA. Again, a mechanic will mark them up.

Dealerships sometimes mark up their parts roughly 3 times the NAPA cost. Others may be less.

I would say that you might be looking at $500-750, if you walk in like a sheep. Could be more.

But it is certainly possible to have it done, and done well, for less.

In New York City or Hays, Kansas, or ????

In my large metro area a dealer will charge about $200.00 for 2 wheels (disc only). My guess is that rear drum brakes wil have a higher labor charge. Figure about $500.00 for the whole thing. I strongly suggest that you call a few shops. Also remember that if the drums/discs are damaged that they may have to be replaced.

But before you go there, perhaps you should also go to

And he can get it done a lot cheaper than that by doing the work at home. But that assumes enough knowlege and the correct tools to do a complete job.

*********MUCH cheaper. And it doesn't take many tools. A little experience helps you do it faster, and with less loss of knuckle skin, but it is within the reach of most people. I agree with you.

Did you happen to pull up Just Brakes on ripoff reports? I wondered why so many people complain. Well, for them to do a brake job at $100, they have to use REALLY cheap parts, have an economically undemanding 'mechanic', and avoid the details.

And probably a lot of up selling

This is an odd site. I see the ripoff reports for JustBrakes, which mainly seem to allege your standard bait-and-switch scams.

But I also see strange advertisements on the left side of the screen. The adverts attempt to entice me to click photographs of young women. One of these ladies ("pinkpetalled") has her legs spread and her hand down the front of her trousers. Perhaps I'm a bit dense, but I can't see that this has got anything to do with consumer protection.

is the $100.00 a low-ball figure to get you sucked in?

and later come up with a bunch of "needed" add-ons.

regardless of who does the job, the job is likely to turn out better if oem pads / shoes are used.

and next best is to pay for / get a lifetime guaranteed pad / shoe. there are about three quality choices for otc brake pads / shoes.

short of replacing the rotors, calipers, bleeding the lines, and turning the rotors / drums - the job isn't too difficult.

A jam-up job is likely to cost one 400 - 500 smackers.

ABS brake repair is generally a dealership job.

What can cause an a b s warning light to light-up when the engine is running? Any one ever had that problem?

And at times it will operate normally for 30 days then start staying on again. The a b s brake thingy is an enigma, some parts of it carry a lifetime - recall.

Ah, I see now; the ads change with each page you load. The young tarts have gone away and are now replaced by touts for gambling and cheap credit.

I havent seen those ads. I usually go to that site when there is a company I want to check out. If I needed brake work, I would be hesitant about using that particular franchise. I have a friend from high school who works for them. I guess I'll have to find a way to ask him what the true story is.

I just checked the complaint reports against Just Brakes at this site. There were 306 reports filed against this franchise.

Let the buyer beware.
