Is there a convenient way to tell the difference between a worn CV joint and a worn differential side gear shaft?
I'm pretty sure I can replace the CV joint but taking out the front wheel drive transmission to get at the differential is a whole other thing according to the description in the Haynes manaul.
Yesterday I heard knocking in the RF wheel when decellerating for traffic lights. So long as I kept pressure on the driveline, including applying the brakes, the noise went away. Today I put the car up on jackstands and tried turning the transaxels by hand as suggested by the Haynes manual listening for noises in the CV housing. I didn't notice any difference between the right and left sides. But when I put the car in gear and tried turning the wheels there was noticably more play in the right than in the left.
