Ford Escort radio problem

Hi,

I have a 91 Ford Escort Wagon that is in very nice shape mechanically. But today I have a problem.

The little panel that shows the time and the radio stations is black. All other lights on the instrument panel are working. The radio works just fine, but no illuminated numbers come on. I have tried toggling between clock and radio, turning the engine off and restarting, but the problem persists.

Is this a major repair? Would it cost as much to have the light bulb behind the panel (I assume it's a light bulb or something similar) replaced as to buy a new radio?

Your help is appreciated. -- Judy

As far as I understand (if the 91 is similiar to the 92, 93, 94 and 95 Ford vehicles we own) the panel is LED's and you can replace them but it would be much easier to just buy the radio off Ebay and have the whole unit replaced rather than replacing the display. I would not recommend you go to the dealer. If you're interested, you may think about getting an aftermarket stereo.
