GM 1970s airbags?

GM made a limited run of Chevrolet fleet cars with "ACRS" way back in 1973,

7 years before the Europeans had airbags. Then in 1974 it was offered on Cadillacs and Buicks as an option for people who hated seat belts. But then what happened? Did few people order those airbags, and they faded away until foreign cars started flogging them in the 1980s?

Those early bags were more dangerous than not wearing belts... When they went off it was like have a couple pro ball players hitting you with a bat !!!

I know they were huge bags, designed for human dummies that didn't wear seat belts. I had wondered if people were injured by them. Mercedes, on the other hand took 9 years before they were happy to unleash them on the general public.
