head gasket replacement 92 saturn SL2

Feb 22, 2009 1 Replies

Greetings,

Looking for feedback for anyone having replaced a head gasket on a Saturn 1.9 DOHC.

This one is out of a 92 SL2. No 3 cylinder had coolant leak. Disassembled, confirmed gasket failure. Head is fined, cleaned up nicely.

Was told by parts shop these are stretch head bolts (need to be replaced, can't reuse). Fine, bought new bolts and gasket.

Using a Haynes manual as a guide. The documented procedure states:

  • install the bolts (clean and dry) and tighten them, in sequence, to

48 ft-lbs
  • remove the bolts (opposite sequence) , coat with engine oil, reinstall
  • tighten to 22 ft-lbs in sequence
  • tighten to 37 ft-lbs in sequence
  • in sequence, tighten all an additional 90 degrees

Appreciate any insight you can provide.

Thanks.

Tom

I'm not sure what you're asking. This seems like a reasonable procedure to follow to me.
