How do I fix a broken shoulder strap on a 1990 Escort?

I've got a 1990 Ford Escort, which isn't in really good condition. (I've had it only a couple of months and the former owner wasn't too careful with it.) Anyway, I've got to replace/fix the broken shoulder strap which is on the driver's side. (The passenger side works just fine.) How do I do that?

Rod,

Look for a replacement at a junk yard. Or, the belting might be replaceable. I sent the belt assemblies from my '76 Jaguar XJ-S to

for "re-webbing." Good work, not too expensive.

I don't know if 1990 Escorts had the motorized seatbelts (passive retraints) or standard manual belts. The newer ones are motorized up to ~1995, and 1990 is right in the range of years that that feature (a God-awful one at that) was popular in general.

If you are refering to the motorized shoulder belt, then there are two part numbers that complete the assembly. If the motor is bad, you only need to get the part that has the motor. But it pays to get the cable/track assembly as well as it is fairly cheap and may save you some hassle of changing the old worn one out. The old track can be excessively tight and put extra stress on the new motor. Most of what you have to access is behind the B-pillar panel and it is very easy to remove. Don't forget the electrical plug when you unbolt the motor unit.

If you are refering to the standard belt setup, you still need to remove the B-pillar panel and unbolt the retractor assembly, then unbolt the high point anchor at the top of the B-pillar. I don't

*think* there is any electrical connector involved in this style, but if there is, it is just for the seatbelt warning light/buzzer circuit.

Didn't the motorized belts have lifetime warranties?
