Ignition wires when to replace them?

When do I need to change my ignition wires? My original GM wires are still in my 1993 vehicle looks and works fine to me. I can wet the whole engine (i.e. engine cleaning) and still be able to start the car but yet my local garage said I should replace them as part of regular engine tune-up. They said to me something about resistance (high or low) that could damage my ignition coils. How should I check my ignition wires and when should I replace them?

My opinion:

Wires that are that old have to have suffered some degradation. They may still be working, but I cannot imagine that they are in very good shape.

Usually, by now, someone has screwed them up when pulling them off to replace the plugs.

I would agree with the shop and would replace them as a maintenance item the next time it is convenient.

For old wires like this, testing them makes little sense.
