I have a Ford Escort 1.6 16v (1993) which gives of a smell of fuel fumes only after stopping the engine.
There are no obvious signs of leakage from anywhere.
Any suggestions as to cause would be welcome..

Check for a broken vapor line between your charcoal canister and the engine.
