Is it true that K&N air filter will
- decrease fuel consumption (marginal)
- increase power (albeit marginal)
If most experiences confirm those, I would like to put one in my car.

In my personal experience...
It (a K&N style air filter) will require more maintenance, be a hassle to clean and re-oil, filter the intake much less effectively and markedly increase the level of noise you hear from the engine (some may prefer this). Unless you are going for that last 10th of a second better et. don't bother the trade offs aren't worth it for your daily transportation. YMMV

Yeah, yeah, yeah. And makes chicks swoon over your car, and stops ring-around-the-collar, and gets that tough soap scum off your shower walls, and makes your coffee taste better. Bullshit.

Well, it *might* just manage the latter task successfully if you put it in your coffee blender. ;)
I've heard the comments about allowing dirt in the engine before with K&N filters. All I can add is that of the several people I know that put them on their vehicle took them off after a year or so. And they really talked the product up when putting it on, but quietly removed it without any fanfare.

They require periodic cleaning & re-oiling to be effective in dirt removal. Few people do this, they just drop them in and forget them. I think the people that are aware of this live with the guilt, then go back to replacement. It's the best solution for most of us.
Logically, I would think that would be to remain effective in having a better flow rate. Once clogged with dirt, less air and less dirt will be able to pass.
Where did you here this idea???
They use interception, impaction, diffusion like most other oil coated filters.
