muffler hanger ('04 Cavalier)

I had to replace the muffler on our '04 Cavalier. The new one ($100) is a Wagner, supposedly not the economy one. The strap hanger everyone seems to be selling (Walker #36153) (a) doesn't seem to wrap far enough around the muffler to close, and (b) has metal so thin that I doubt it would last a year, if I could get it on.

Is this just what everyone uses, or are there better hangers somewhere? The one I took off appears to be the factory original; if so, it lasted

8 years.

Thanks, George

The Wagner muffler may be made different than the original equipment & the Walker brand, so the Walker straps may not work.

the other option for the muffler strap is a Walker #36360. They give both numbers as an option for your car. I take it your old strap doesn't fit the new muffler?

That's what it looks like. The Wagner is about 1/2" thicker through the middle. It's on the car now, so I think I'm stuck with it.

doesn't look right. I may go out and look at one anyway - the pic might be wrong, or maybe I can weld something onto it. PITA.

It sort of fits - it at least goes around, but doesn't close fully. Plus, its days are numbered - the metal is pretty thin. I used it anyway, just to get the car on the road.

Correction: the muffler is also a Walker (#21284). I'd swear ppl were saying 'Wagner' on the phone, but the box says 'Walker'. Of course, that just makes the hanger thing even more odd.

And, ...

... says the 36153 hanger is "Used with 21284". So, it must just be me? It wouldn't be the first time I was wrong; but, it sure doesn't look like it comes even close to fitting. Oh well.

Yeah I just double checked the listing. Those are the correct part numbers for you car.

Walker is pretty good about being close to OEM. It could be possible the strap might be boxed wrong.

Maybe a longer bolt would solve your problem?

PS - also the 21284 is a good quality muffler.. Stay away from the

18000 series those are cheap. $100 isn't a bad price either. I sell them for $111.00

Another option you can try is to find someone who carries AP/Merit brand and maybe their strap might work better.

Thanks - I'll take a look. I can catch this hanger w/ a longer bolt, so probably good enough. I wonder if Walker's assembly shop (pkg says India) is shorting them on the steel.
