afternoon all;

Ok 1999 mustang 5.0 auto w/od today the shift handle will not come out of park unless EXTREME force is used on the button on the side of the shift handle..

assume a plastic retainer, or spring took a crap..so has anyone else had to deal with this malfunction, and is it easily repairable?

any help is appreciated....frank

In 99 they had the 4.6L engine. There is a brake interlock that keeps you from shifting out of park unless your foot is on the brake. The switch on the brake pedal might have gone bad and it's not unlocking the interlock even if you push on the brake. To get around this you should shift out of park BEFORE you turn the key to the ON position. Just turn it to the UNLOCK position and move the shifter to N. Then you can turn it to ON and start the engine - keep your foot on the brake.
