Threw a belt this AM when heading to work. Tonight got home to replace belt and check things out. As it turns out looks like the smog pump pully has started to wobble a little (why it threw the belt which in turn took out the outermost alt. belt) and the bearings are in the process of going out. In short the smog pump pully bearing is hot.
It may be a little while before I can get a replacement air pump and for now am not running the smog pump belt as a temporary workaround. Car is smoother/quieter than it has been for some time now that the failing smog pump is dormant. I understand the cat is not operating at full efficiency w/o the xtra air injected in but again this is a temporary workaround...
Is this OK for say 2-4 weeks of driving or could I damage anything with the smog pump just sitting there? It's an '84 GM
2.8L V6 w/ Varajet 2bbl. Basically stock - the cat was replaced 3-4 years ago and the O2 sensor maybe 2 yrs ago.
