Engines without a knock sensor are designed not to need one IMHO. 8-) Knock sensors are only used because we 'have to use an ECU' to run any modern engine...

Yes, but that design doesn't mean they don't need one. An unanticipated build-up of engine deposits (oil detergent residues eg.) can have an engine pinging away merrily.
