Rear wheel bearing replacement.

Back in the Early 1980s I replaced front wheel bearings in a 1975 Pinto Station Wagon and a 1977 Toyota Corolla (both rear wheel drive). In both cases I was able to work the old bearing races out, and the new ones in without a press by using a flat drift pin punch and a BFH. It was tedious but got the job done.

Generally speaking can one replace rear wheel bearing in a typical compact front wheel drive car the same way?

(I don't know the make or year yet, should hear later today.)

As they say on the net, thanks in advance.

Not if it's newer than about 1990, They use a hub&bearing unit just like they have in the front.

And if they're old and not unitized, they probably look very similar to the *front* wheel bearings on your Pinto (e.g. the same type of tapered rollers that pretty much every RWD vehicle used on the front wheels back in the day) which you can replace with a hammer and a brass drift.

I like to save the old bearing races and slit them with a cutoff tool to make cheapa$$ tools for pressing/driving in the new ones.
