rec.autos 1999 Nissan Pathfinder LE

When I turn off the engine and restart the engine trouble light comes on. The mechanic resets the new O2 sensors and the engine light stays off.

Then if I restart the car the trouble light comes on again.

The mechanic said it is the computer board in the car that needs to be changed.

I can't get an emissions test unless I have the O2 sensors reset and don't shut off the engine.

Any thoughts on this diagnosis and what the cost to replace the computer board is?

Thanks,

The light means that the computer has logged an error. But we need to know what the error code is before we know anything.

Did your mechanic just reset the code, or did he replace the O2 sensors?

That's entirely possible, but it may also be completely spurious. If we know what codes are being generated and what the values the scanner is reading for the O2 sensors, we might have some chance of figuring out what the issue is.

There are millions of things that can cause the O2 sensors to be out of range. Knowing what the readings on the scanner are will at least rule some of them out.

What led your mechanic to believe it was the computer module?
