94 Pathfinder Oil light

Oil pump screen is plugging up from sludge/crap in the pan. The only fix is removing the pan and cleaning all that gunk out. I've -never- seen a nissan oil pump fail like this, it's always sludge in the pan. I'd also sugest removing the valve covers and cleaning up all the sludge there as well.

Hello all,

I have a 94 Pathfinder with 157,000 miles. About 5 miles into my daily commute, I began hearing the valves tapping as if oil wasn't getting to them. Then the oil light came on. I immediately pulled over and turned the engine off. I waited 5 minutes, started the engine, everything sounded normal (no valve tapping, no oil light on). I drove for about 2 blocks and the same thing happened again. I shut off the engine and had the truck towed back to my house. There is oil in the engine. I have a few questions:

1) Did I do any engine damage by starting it up the second time and trying to continue on? 2) Is this an oil pump failure or could it be something else? 3) The truck needs a timing belt change, should I have a Nissan service dept check it out or find a reputable mechanic to troubleshoot the problem?

Thanks in advance.

Get it looked at. It's impossible to say what needs done to correct the problem. And you need a belt change so get it all done at one time. I doubt that any engine damage occurred for that short period of time. I had a vehicle that had a problem with baffling in the oil pan and if you went around a corner at a high rate of speed and were a quart of oil low, the pump would suck air. This happened many times and never did any engine damage to my knowledge.
