Tire Pressure Monitor System Question

Hello,



Family member has a 2015 Subaru Outback Premium.



Will be having all 4 tires replaced soon (at approx. 50,000 miles)



Question regarding the Tire Pressure Monitor System, please:



The quote we received includes a statement that they: will re-program TPMS.



Great, but is there anything (else) with the TPMS we should be doing ?



I understand that there is a battery in each for the transmitter. Should these all be replaced now at 50,000 ? The whole gage perhaps ?



BTW: if not, how long are they, and/or the batteries, usually good for ? Approx. costs ?



Any other suggestions re the TPMS ?

"Normal" battery life is around 5-7 years. But it depends a lot on driving habits. If you make a lot of short trips where the sensors are constantly turning on/off or driving a lot of miles per year they may only last 4-5.

No battery replacement possible. They are sealed inside the sensor.

Replacement costs - around $50.00 each for an OEM sensor. around $35.00 for a good after market unit.

Sensor replacement isn't very difficult if you know how. The basics are to remove the tire/wheel from the vehicle. Release the air, Break the outside tire bead ONLY Compress the tire down so you can access the sensor. Replace the sensor. Let tire return to bead area. Inflate the tire to proper pressure for bead to seat. Check pressure against door placard. Reinstall tire/wheel. Reprogram the TPMS receiver to read new sensor.

IF you only break the outside bead you don't disturb the balance of the tire.
