troubleshooting

i have a 99 mitsubishi eclipse 2.0 dohc non turbo. i have a problem with just driving the thing. it idles roughly and when u try accelerating the RPM's go up very slowly and there is a popping sound coming out the intake. also upon acceleration the car stutters as if it wants to go but something is stopping it.i put it on a gas analyzer and the HC's were as high as 5000. im suspecting either a stuck closed exhaust valve or a stuck open intake valve. or possibly just worn cam-lobes. tomorrow in ill do a CLT and ill find out whats happening inside there but if anybody has any ideas of freeing up stuck valves please let me know ill appreciate it

I imagine the check engine light is on.. what are the codes?.. it sounds like it could even be ignition related..

Is this something that happened suddenly or did it gradually get worse ? Has the timing belt been replaced ? How many miles on the engine ?

the codes were p0351 and po352 which are both the ignition coil but this light was only on for about 10 minutes then went away on its own. . the timing belt has been changed about 1 month ago the engine has

71000 miles on it. this problem just started about couple days ago and it happened all of a sudden.

it sounds more like a timing jump than sticking valves.

Does the car run that bad all the time or is this an intermitent problem ? If it runs bad all the time I would suspect an incorrectly installed timing belt that has jumped time. That engine will bend valves if the cam timing is off far enough.

If it is an intermitent problem and the timing belt is ok I would first look at the PCM for leaking capacitors. The PCM should be located behind the center console. It is somewhat of a pain to remove. Take it out, remove the cover and check for stains around the bottom of the capacitors. If the circuit board is ok you can have the caps replaced.

The codes described are for 2 ignition coils. The problem is probably not valve or timing related, but ignition. wiggle the wiring harness and see if you can get a stumble out of it, try switching coils to other cylindres and see if the code changes.
