Trying to unlock your car with a cell phone doesn't work

A lady just came in my work and she just locked her keys in her car. She mentioned about that trick where you can take a keyless entry and through the cell phone you can open the locks. We had her hubby press the button several times from his house while he held it next to the phone while I held my cell phone next to the door lock.. Nothing, nadda...Maybe it only works with certain types of keyless entry locks, or it's one of those urban myths.

That would require the key fobs to work on sound within the range of human hearing and/or cell phones to work. They don't use sound, so it's never going to work period. All remotes either use radio waves or infrared. And when they use radio waves it's in a completely different frequency range than cell phones use.

Can you think of any reason why it _should_ work?

Radio = magic.

Key fobs = radio.

Cell phones = radio.

Therefore cell phones and key fobs are magic.

And magic will let you do _anything_.

Haven't you learned _anything_ from watching direct-to-cable movies?

Once or twice on tv news, they said the crooks have electronic devices that can open those fancy electronic car locks. They can unlock/open the doors and trunks,,, and probally much more.I don't trust any kinds of electronic locks at all! cuhulin

The problem with the electronic locks are that they are VERY limited. Note that, although they usually show the numbers 0-9 there are only 5 buttons. That means you only have 25 possible combinations. Then you look at the buttons for wear/dirt and it gets even easier. Plus it doesn't really matter because if they are going to grab a car for parts they will likely just smash a window and go. Or tow it away on a flatbed. With a couple of guys in "official" looking gear nobody gives a second glance.

I think it works with OnStar. If you have OnStar you can call them on a phone and they can unlock the car.

That's because OnStar is connected to the car physically. Not the same thing at all.

Actually it is much the same thing.

For door unlocking, the primary difference between a keyfob transmitter and the OnStar transmitter is the operating range.

Well, the frequencies are different. And the codes that are sent. They are both radio but are still quite a bit different.

They are both radio, and that's the crux of the matter.

It is not important what is "connected to the car physically" or isn't, or what the frequencies/codes are, it's still a transmitted radio signal. And you cannot transmit a radio signal via a cell phone in the manner described by the OP (way back on Thursday).

If it's physically connected to the car in the right places you can do a

*lot* more things than any fob can do. The fact that OnStar is inside the car led me to believe it was connected to the car. I've never had a car with it. Don't really want it.

The name Radio comes from the name, Radius.I don't own a cell phone now, but I used to own one, back in 1998 and 1999.I remember it said in my cell phone owners/operators booklet that my cell phone is a Radio device. If you own a cell phone, look around in your owners/operators booklet and see what it says. There are many, many different kinds of Radios. cuhulin

There are many more than 25 possible combinations. The actual number is

5*5*5*5*5 = 5**5 = 15,625

The codes are order dependent and you can repeat numbers.

Any theif that wants to steal the car could break in a lot faster with a slim jim, or just by braking the glass.
