Really the only way to check it is with an oscilloscope, but if it's got over 100K on it it's a fair bet that it's toast. I'd also carefully inspect all the wiring from the sensor back... it could have burned through on the manifold or something. Check with rec.autos.makers.vw.watercooled, there's probably someone with your exact car that can tell you how to go about this.
