OT(ish) - Car out of country when MOT/Tax expire

I am currently in Ireland working (3 week contract). My Tax expires on

31 Oct, and first MOT is due on the same day. I will not be in the UK until at least the 10th Nov.

should I just book an MOT for 11th Nov, and get Tax that afternoon, and hope for the best? (I'm aware that I can drive to scheduled MOT test without MOT, but will I get away with MOT in Edinburgh, and driving there from Stranraer?)

On the Tax form, it mentions 'or equivalent' test. Does this include Irish DoE testing?

Any advice / suggestions gratefully accepted.

M.

Why not book it in for an MOT in Stranraer?

Nip over the border to NI and have it tested there?

I would have assumed, what with EU harmonisation that all cars would have to meet a certain EU minimumumum standard so all countries would have to have a MOT type test. Presumably the Irish test would therefore be legal in this country BICBW IANAL etc. Are you in the AA or RAC because I'm sure they could tell you or (sound of light bulb illuminating) email DVLA. They do actually respond quickly to email queries in my experience.

It was somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the drugs began to take hold. I remember m_ snipped-for-privacy@hotmail.com (Michael Murray) saying something like:

Just get off the ferry and drive home in it. If you're stopped, it's easy for you to prove you've been abroad and are only now coming back. The traffic plod come across this kind of thing fairly regularly and as long as they're satisfied you're genuine there's no problem.

Nope...

The Irish have only had a test for a few years, as have the French.

In France, you can still drive a car with huge holes in the sills and missing lights, as they can only actually prevent a car being on the road if the brakes are iffy. Pop-rivetted structural repairs are fine.

In Germany, you can fail the test for having the wrong brand of tyres fitted.

Jeez. What happens to the visitors who drive in this country? I see a few cars with French or Irish plates on so how come they're road legal or are they?

...provided the car is actually in a roadworthy condition.

If they're legal in the country they're registered in, they're legal here.

That's in *bloody* good nick compared to the taxis in Mauritania. It's got a full complement of doors fitted, for starters.

True; bumping and banging around the potholed roads here for a few months, that's a good point. :)

Point of info. The Irish test is as tough or tougher than the UK MOT.

OP HERE: Car is roadworthy, this is actually its first MOT, so I don't think it will have any problems. I will probably just check it in for MOT, the day I return.

I think I basically wanted re-assurance that I wasn't going to be sent a stupidly large fine in the post on November 2nd !

thanks, M.

Hello Michael, Give the DVLA (or whatever they are called now) a call. My mate spends most of his life in France and his UK reg car MOT runs out in Feb. He is not expecting to come back to UK until May and he phoned DVLA who said, no problem, if he fills out the SORN Statutory Off Road Notification and makes a specific appointment in UK for the MOT in May, he is covered for the journey from the ferry to the MOT appointment. Although the SORN is not required in your circumstances, if you make an appointment for the MOT then you are covered and this will satisfy your insurance requirements also. He said DVLA were very helpful so probably best you ring 'em to get confirmation for your circumstances-- Hope this helps, Justin Case

My old man had an A-reg Cav estate. It failed the first MOT on rotten brake pipes.
