well, duh

quote:

"A generation after the former Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping made mastering neodymium and 16 other elements known as rare earths a priority, China dominates the market, with far-reaching effects ranging from global trade friction to US job losses and threats to national security."

all summed up by the masterly understatement:

"It's amazing how this issue seems to have caught the country off-guard"

no shit.

Well, what's interesting is that the rest of the world is still producing just about as much Nd as it was producing before the Chinese ramped production up.

The thing is, the demand is now far, far higher. And much of that is because the price is much lower, so it's now cost effective to use rare earth magnets in applications where ferrite or alnico would have been used before.

That's just how these things work.
