What is that car?

No, tried to shorten link direct to picture to prevent long load time for those who looked. Anyway linked to car above, instead of the caddi below it. The page is worth viewing, lots of great old cars on it, scroll down below the jag to see the red convertible caddie I meant to post:

I just finished watching "A Millionaire For Christy" and was also intrigued by the very attractive lines of the 1930's-era 2-seater roadster MacMurray drove.

There is no way that the car was a Jaguar XK120... look at the headlights!

- On the movie car, they are stand-alone units, on the XK120 they are faire d into the fenders. The rounded top of the engine hood reminded me a lot o f the earlier Jaguar SS100 - especially when the louvers were shown in a cl ose up of MacMurray driving... but the Jaguar SS100 had much larger headlig hts and an upright radiator grille, so it's eliminated unless this was a cu stom bodied Jag SS100... but the SS100 was a very small and low sports car, where this one appeared to be larger than an SS100.

The British SQUIRE automobile came to my mind in a number of views - especi ally from the rear, and it meets the 'larger size' criterion, but Squires h ad a massive chrome grille that doesn't match the movie car's grille at all .

The movie car's radiator grille also had a steep rake to it, whereas most B ritish cars of the 1930's were upright, including Lagondas-(so they are als o eliminated). The Italians (Alfa Romeo in particular) and the French were better known for swoopy aerodynamic grilles and fender lines in the 1930's . In several shots, what little I could see of the front grille reminded m e of an Alfa, but I'm pretty familiar with Alfas and concluded it was not o ne I'd ever seen.

For now, I am concluding that the car might have been a bespoke 1930's car

- with fenders and a grille custom-bodied to somewhat match the elegant st yling of a Touring-bodied Alfa Romeo 8C2900B. It'd be great if someone cou ld post some still screenshots of the car so we can study it further.

Custom built Talbot - with leopard skin seats and a bar. Built for $13,000. Only 36 inches in height with top collapses - long as a limousine and capable of 135 mph top speed.

Gmailers frequently respond to old posts. Oldest one I've seen so far was for a 12 yr old post. Could also be code for "we attack at dawn" or "the drugs are being shipped".

It's not Google Groups fault if it has a remarkable retention policy. Most Usenet servers don't have posts from the past because it's not practical to keep all that material on their servers. What's the retention for most new sgroups? My guess is that it's a few weeks. GG's retention makes it truly a great resource but you will get blasts from the past - mostly because it's possible. I don't have any problems with these kinds of posts.

Dejavu kept everything. I would hope that google is doing the same, even if it's no longer possible to do many searches -- which I find unforgiveable. It's like an encyclopedia with no index.

Eternal September (free) keeps posts going back years -- probably size- rather than date-oriented.
