Why are the Transmission Speed Sensors so expensive?

The speedometer stopped working and I had the Transmission Speed Sensor replaced

2004 Camry 2004 LE 60,000 miles Cost of Sensor: $220 (just for the part -- ordered from auto parts store)

Why are the Transmission Speed Sensors so expensive?

Depends on the brand and where you buy it.

When you say you had it replaced, WHO replaced it? If you took it to a shop they charged you list price for the part. They paid about 80 bucks if it's the common sensor on the trans output.
