Camry 2004 LE 4 cylinder

The speedometer stopped working and I had the Transmission Speed Sensor replaced

Cost of Sensor: $220

Why are the Camry Transmission Speed Sensors so expensive?

Just like a dealer will charge 100$ for a 10$ electrical switch, the reason is they Can charge you whatever they want.

Yes, but this wasn't a dealer -- Independent mechanic that ordered the part from the auto parts store.

******* He doesnt have to sell it to you at his cost, whatever that is.

There is an aftermarket one on rockauto.com that's about $140 + shipping. But a mechanic will typically sell you at the "suggested retail price" and maybe plus a mark-up. That's where a lot of the profit is besides labor charges.
