1988 Corolla SR5 Vacuum Leak?

Ok here is a list of symptoms: car idles high (around 2k) runs rough at lower speeds engine keeps going after the car is turned off

Its a corolla SR5 (130k, auto) with a carburetor. The carb was recently rebuilt but the problem is still there. Any ideas? Do I need a whole new carb or is the problem somewhere else?

One more thing. There is a small oil leak from the distributor o-ring. How hard is it to replace the o-ring?

Who rebuilt the carburetor? Is there some kind of guarantee on the work? The symptoms sound like a rich mixture or too much fuel in the bowl. You should not need a new carburetor if the rebuild was done properly.

The distributor O-ring is very easy to replace if you have a timing light. Mark the distributor's position with an awl, remove the distributor shaft, install the new O-rings, replace, and re-time.

It was rebuilt by a mechanic. Im pretty sure it was done properly.

When the engine keeps going after the car is turned off, the cause is usually carburetor-related. If the carburetor was rebuilt properly, then the combination of symptoms that you described in your original post should be gone.

To answer your original question, a vacuum leak will not cause the combination of symptoms that you are describing.

IMHO you have bad spark plugs - too hot for your compression ratio - any modification? or deposits on the head? It can cause 2nd a 3rd symptom, maybe

1st too.
