2004 Toyota 4Runner Shocks

I have a leak in my left rear shock and need to have it replaced. So far, three different mechanics have told me three different repairs I need. The most costly one is $1,400 to replace the left rear, left front, and the gear box. Another place said it was not the shock and a hydraulic problem and should be covered under the warranty. The third place said I need the two shocks and a controller (assume it the same as the gear box) for $1,300. I know I need the repair done but just want to make sure I need all this work done and shell out the big $$$. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Which suspension do you have in your 4Runner?

Shock absorbers should be replaced as pairs on a particular axle, in other words, replace both rear or both front at the same time.

If you are getting 3 different opinions on what is needed for a repair, find out which one will guarantee that their repair will work. Unfortunately, I doubt if anyone in this group will be able to diagnose your vehicle without actually seeing it first hand.

As far as whether it is covered by warranty, if the vehicle is less than 36 months old from the date of first use and has less than 36,000 miles, it should be covered by warranty unless something damaged it.
