My neighbor bought a Prius and I got to test drive it. The car is really nice to drive and roomy inside. Between my 2005 Sienna minivan (15.7 MPG) and my 4Runner (17.6MPG) they guzzle like crazy. So even rice burners can burn like crazy... but i guess as long as we keep paying these prices, they will keep going up... demand is up another 1% this month...

Let's see: the first family doesn't serve in wars, doesn't purchase gas but uses the biggest gas-guzzling porkers available. Somehow, I really don't think they give a crap - know hat I mean?

Twenty or so years ago, they raised our real estate taxes sky high because they could. Here in California, we voted in Proposition 13, and that fixed that. Now they are raising our gas prices sky high because they can. I believe the Prius and its siblings will fix that.

They say there's worldwide demand raising the price of gasoline. That's funny because it doesn't seem to have affected the price of gas in Caracas.

but it looks likeother countries have been victims of the greed of the refineries and the politicians, too, so we can see what can (and probably will) happen if we do nothing.

I'm going to do what I can, myself - - I drive 60 mph, and only use a few of the horses I paid for at the stop lights. My '02 Dodge Grand Caravan shows 36 MPG current reading on level freeway, and 24.8 MPG average reading in freeway and in-town driving, so it can be done without spending an extra $25K, when there are no van-type vehicles being fitted with full hybrid systems. When the hybrid van does appear, I will gladly trade in my fuel-injected V6 Dodge for one, and maybe if you help, too, we can get the price of gas down and prove that "they can't".

How come you get only 16 on your Sienna? I get 20 in stop and go and 28 on a trip.

AWD gets you all the time... i get 23 on the Highway, but I do most driving in stop and go and its bad... really bad...

That explains it alright. Did you really need the AWD version? How do you like the run flat tires?

I think so, yes

I think some who buy hybrids care more about the planet, but to buy one for economical reasons seems moot to me, since what you'll save in gas will go into the cost of the damned thing.

Not only that but how much more money does the fuel price increase represents at the end of the week or the year. Depending on the number of kms/miles one drives in a year, it could represent only a few hundred dollars. At 95 cents a liter, it costs me CAN$2,375/year and at $1,13 a liter, it costs me CAN$2,825/year. A difference of $450.00. If I trade in my 98 Camry for a Prius, how long will it take me to recoup my, er, "investment"? Has anyone done it and done the match? In the meantime, I may be willing to sacrifice a few bags of chips, chocolate bars and pops to offset the higher cost of gasoline. I am also willing not to drive to the mall when I'm bored and to stay home instead to do other things. I am also willing to lower my average speed on the highway and to be more gentel on the pedal when the light turns green. UNTIL, the jack the price of gas so high that we all have to stay home. (Just a few thoughts).

I have no problems with the run flats.. as a matter of fact, a few weeks back I had a new roof put on the house, so the installers dropped a few nails that ended up in the Sienna... went to the dealer (running flat) and they fixed it with 20 minute wait... i heard the horror stories about new tires, etc, but found a source online for them for only $149 each... I wanted the AWD because I intend to tow my pontoon boat with this thing and its easier to use AWD when you are pulling it out of a slippery boat launch... plus i live in the snow belt, where the city doesnt believe in salting the streets, etc...

but did i REALLY need it, probably not.. i actually went to get the honda odyssey that same day, but the dealer pissed me off, so i went to my toyota dealer and said give me a loaded Sienna with all the options... so i got the XLE with AWD, navigation, etc and I paid 36k for it... comparable Odyssey was 42k and the dealer said he was doing me a favor by not charging above MSRP...

Don't you just love dealers who do us favors like that.

I live in snow country too, but I have no heavy load to haul and don't have a steep driveway so I never considered the AWD. I have a friend who does have a steep driveway and he traded his 05 Sienna in for a Honda Pilot, which has better clearance and four wheel drive, plus it'll tow more weight. Mine will be here for several more years. So far it's been very reliable, quiet, smooth ride and responsive, plus my Toyota dealer is only about 4 miles away and is pretty easy work with. I've only had it back for the radiator recall and oil changes. Two years old next month.
