check engine light

Hello Everyone, I have 97 Camry LE and the check engine light has come on. I think its more than improperly closed gas tank because light keeps coming on and off. This started after I had the oil changed. Does anyone know if that can make a difference? (For example if some cap is not properly closed etc.) Anyways my second quesion was is there anyone in or around Boston who has a OBDII scan tool where he/she can tell me what exactly is wrong with my car before I go to a dealer? I am ready to pay whatever we can mutually decide for your services. Thanks a lot and have a good one.

If there is an AutoZone in your area, they should retrieve the codes for you for free. There's a chance that the problem may not be a loose gas cap.

My Highlander's (based on Camry chassis) check engine light came on (and stayed on) a couple days after my last oil change. In the end I determined that it was caused by a vacuum hose that had pulled loose from the air cleaner box (thick rubber hose that plugged into some sensor on the firewall side of the air cleaner box). I reconnected the hose and the light cleared itself after about 5 days of driving. I don't know what the air cleaner box looks like on a Camry, but it's hard to get the lid off of mine because of the vacuum hoses. I'm guessing that the hose got pulled off when the dealer checked the air cleaner at the time of the oil change.

I also had the check engine light come on one time before this. It was a few days after I changed my air cleaner. I took it to the dealer and they diagnosed/fixed it as a cracked vacuum hose. I'm guessing now that it was really a hose pulled loose, but they didn't want to say that because they had just changed the oil (and checked the air cleaner) a few days prior. Anyhow, I was smarter the second time.

This might not be your problem, but it's something to check. Good luck.

AutoZone auto parts stores have a tool program that includes the OBD II Scan Tool. This program is one where you can borrow tools that are once-in-a-life-time tools for most home-mechanics; tools that you need once and probably never again. Anyway, you can go there and get the scan tool and use it for free.

Thanks guys you saved me almost 50-75 bucks. I have P0401 which is something to do with EGR flow sensor. I think I will try to clean the clogged valve and conduits. Thanks a lot
