Down shifting

Whoops...I didn't see the part about it being an automatic transmission. Still, I don't recommend dowhshifting unless you are on a long downhill run. Brakes are cheap to replace. Increasing the strain on the automatic may shorten its life, and it will not be cheap to repair/replace. The act of slowing down involve disipating energy. Doing this through the transmission is asking for trouble.

Sorry but you have both happening inside your engine!

Detonation is 1. The act of exploding 2. An explosion.

I don't see how gas igniting is not an explosion or the 'act of exploding' which is the definition. And, explosion:

a.. 1.. A release of mechanical, chemical, or nuclear energy in a sudden and /often/ violent manner with the generation of high temperature and usually with the release of gases. 2.. A violent bursting as a result of internal pressure. 3.. The loud, sharp sound made as a result of either of these actions. And since it is the process of burning, it is /also/ combustion. Any other reasoning for this is wrong and has been applied by /some/ people in the field who are also wrong and have not used the accurate definition of terms.

If they would have called it the Detonation chamber would that have eased your mind?

No they are used to prevent pre-ignition, not detonation.

Thank you for most of your answers. Regarding webtv- I can afford a computer but I don't want one. With webtv, I can relax on the couch with a wireless keyboard on my lap. I can access many newsgroups at no extra charge. Email is easy (I can have up to 6 different addresses). I even have (and use) spell check. My house is set up so I don't have room for a desk (for a computer). I can use the internet and listen to music on my stereo at the same time. You people that are condemning webtv are prejudiced the same way some people are against races and religions that they are not familiar with. On topic - I have stopped down shifting except going down long hills slowly. My last brake job cost me $300.

Downshifting an automatic for no reason is a bad thing.

Not at all.

It's "you're a prick", dumbass.

It opened up its service and allowed people access to USENet with a crappy newsreader.

Posting to USENet has nothing to do with self-worth.

Says someone who can't spell "you're".

He can't. He really believes the fuel-air mixture doesn't detonate. Guess it just pushes the pistons by "thinking" about it.

Poor little Goard. Would you like me to send you a few buck so you can buy a dictionary?

I'll take the explode with sudden violence. Thanks!

An explosion with sudden violence.

What's REALLY funny is that, while Webster does say as is quoted above, the American Heritage Dictionary shows:

det·o·na·tion (dµt?n-³?sh?n) n. 1. The act of exploding. 2. An explosion.

and

com·bus·tion (k?m-b¾s?ch?n) n. Abbr. com., comb. 1. The process of burning. 2. A chemical change, especially oxidation, accompanied by the production of heat and light. 3. Violent anger or agitation: Combustion within the populace slowly built up to the point of revolution. [Middle English, from Late Latin combusti½, combusti½n-, from Latin combustus, past participle of comb¿rere, to burn up, blend of com-, intensive pref.; see COM- and amb¿rere, to burn around (ambi-, ambi- + ¿rere, to burn).] --com·bus?tive (-t¹v) adj.

Suuuure.

Any computer can have a wireless keyboard. Of course, we can watch tv AND be using the computer at the same time.

You just can't post correctly. Not your fault. Webtv's fault.

Wow, a whole 6? Hahahahaha.

Even going down long hills slowly isn't a good enough reason to waste your transmission. You're not using a manual.

Pre-detonation or pre-igniton is bad. Detonation is good.

The transmission.

There really is no such thing as 'pre-detonation' just pre-ignition, you can have detonation that occurs before spark, but that's not pre-detonation since detonation is the process of gas exploding, there is no 'pre' =)

This really is a complicated subject. The term detonation can be used in more than one way and in the auto world for /some/ has a specific definition, which it should not. Really a whole new term should have been used to describe 'detonation' in a combustion engine.

No...I said that 'combustion' moved the pistons, if there's any detonation involved then that's a bad thing...answer a question for me please, why do modern engines employ a 'knock sensor' (if that's the right term,- maybe ping detector?).

Another question, what is ping?...what is knock?

Combustion causes a violent expansion that causes the pistions to move. Cobustion is detonation.

I'm SO glad you keep showing how truly stupid you are. If it doesn't detonate, there's no combustion.

Pre-detonation. Detonation that occurs before it is intended.

Actually, you have it wrong. It is more like a $3,000 replacement cost . . .

Gary - even downshifting in a manual is not a simple procedure. You can shorten the life of your engine and manual transmission if you don't do it right. There have been many discussions on the do's and don't about downshifting a manual transmission already posted on this forum. The ultimate argument has been that brakes pads are inexpensive and easily replaced, whereas a clutch in a front wheel drive can be interesting. Even with a rear wheel drive car - I would prefer replacing the brake pads any day . .

That's not true, as you can see by my response to you. The OP needs to learn how to cut and paste. Webtv has had that capability since the '90s. I believe the homepage has a link to the instructions.
