engine trouble

Im working on my friends 1985 toyota corolla he was complaining it wouldnt start so far i have replaced the feul pump(major leak) feul filter he replaced the spark plugs and i just recently replaced the distributer car and rotor. I havent seen the the car since it hasn't started but he said that there is smoke and flame coming from the air box (the engine is carburated) from what he described the smoke and flame are coming from the manifold normally i would say the firing order is wrong but since i replaced the distributer i know its right im now thinking the timeing belt is jumping but im unsure if that would actually cause "puffs of flame" from the manifold any one have any ideas?

Check the sight glass on the side of the carburetor to make sure the fuel level in the bowl is even with the notches on the side of the glass. If fuel is leaking out of the bowl into the manifold, it could cause backfiring and the flames your friend is describing. Check the engine oil to see if it is contaminated with fuel.

Incorrect cam timing could also cause flames out of the air box, although that is not the usual symptom.
