I am not quite sure what your point is. My point is that the problem was the tires not the vehicle. Furthermore, among similar vehicles of that period (95-1999 mid sized SUVs), the Explorer was one of the safest in the category with a safety record far better than a Toyota

4Runner. 4Runners from the mid to late 90's had a rollover death rate several times that of 4 door Explorers. The whole "Explorers are death traps" epic was a media driven frenzy, not based on fact. The OP that claimed 200 people died in Explorer rollovers was repeating mis-information from a decade ago. The actual number was a fraction of that. If you want to trash Ford for buying crap tires from Firestone, I am right there with you. But much of what was claimed at the time, if not a down right lie, was clearly a mis-interpretation of the facts. It was my opinion at the time that the Explorer, the most popular SUV at the time, was attacked not because it was a particularly dangerous, but because it was a convenient target for those who hated SUVs. Of course there is the whole trial lawyer industry. They deliberately spread mis-information in order to generate clients.
