And, from what I've read, it's voluntary. Only six vehicles have seen any kind of binding, and no one has been hurt.

I actually applaud Toyota for trying to fix some of their defects for a change. As Toyota sales increase, they will be less and less likely be able to sweep their problems under the rug.

Yes, we have a customer that was badly burned in one. He no longer comes in. I actually rode in the truck to pick up his car to drive to the dealer. I know he ended up with some $$$ from the deal. He was in rough shape. Was awful to even look at him. I felt bad.

A few years ago many of the Japanese imports had to replace millions of seat belts that did not buckle correctly after a few years of use. This was before the internet became popular. Back in Japan, Toyota press releases claimed there were nothing wrong with the seatbelts...... they blamed sloppy Americans for getting food stuck in the mechanisms so they did not close correcctly. I believe the US regulators claimed it was due to deteroiation of plastic part caused by exposure to the sunlight.

Like I said this was before the internet was popular but I did a search and found someone else mentioning it though they mention it with respect to Honda. The page is slow to load. I am not related to the author.

That late eighties recall effected mostly low end Japanese cars that used the same belt, from the same Japanese manufacture who had to eat the cost. Toyota, Mitsubishi, Honda, Mazda etc. were affected.

According to Toyota documents provided to NHTSA administartion there were "several" vehicles with ball joint failures at low mileage. As usual, Toyota tried to claim there was not a problem. It took a year for NHTSA to force this "voluntary" recall. The funny thing is, ball joint failure is only a minor issue in the NHTSA complaint database for Toyota trucks. Brake problems and cruise control problems are a lot more common. Why no recall for these items? Probably the ownrers are doing something wrong (like actrually driving the vehicle).
