Replace Oil Pump on 2003 Camry w/ 2.4

Hi;

I have to change the oil pump on my 2003 Camry w/ a 4 cyl 2.4 engine. What is the reason for aligning the oil pump with the crank and cam? It would seem very easy to just undo the nut on the oil pump sprocket, and place it on the new pump. Is it critical to ensure that the mark on the pump matches with the marks on the cyl head and crankshaft? If so, why?

Thanks for any help. Pat

I think that the crank position sensor is mounted on it, but I'm not

100% sure of it. Ray O would probably know for sure, watch for his post.

According to the factory repair manual for the Gen 5 Camry on this web site:

The section under lubrication for the 2AZ-FE (4 cylinder) engine does not make mention of ensuring that the mark on the pump matches with the marks on the cylinder head and crankshaft, but if you overhaul the pump, it is necessary to match the marks on the rotor and driven rotor. Changing the oil pump on the V6 engine is a lot more involved.

You're welcome!

By the way, why do you have to replace the oil pump? If you measured oil pressure at the oil sender port and oil pressure is low, check the screen on the oil pump pickup to make sure it is not clogged and pull a valve cover to check the condition of the head and cams.

If you don't know, why don't you just STFU. A 2003 4cyl Camry hasn't got a distributor.
