The vast majority of water pumps are driven off of the aux belt -- either a V-belt or a serpentine belt. Ray is right, I haven't much direct expereince with Toyota water pumps, although our '02 Tacoma PreRunner with the 2.7L four cylinder was most certainly driven off of the aux belt. Allow me to restate that, there was a aux belt, and a pulley where the water pump normally belongs; assuming there really was a water pump where it belongs, I further assume it was driven by the belt.
The 3RZ-Fe engine's water pump drive is a little unusual for a Toyota ;-)
Toyota 2AZ-FE water pump is driven by the accessory belt, 4 cylinder Camry, Highlander and Scion.

Must be a US thing then, i *think* the only one ive ever seen it on is a prototype VM engine for an anchient rangerover. Most of my experience is on '90s-'00s euro boxes and 'yota and ive yet to see one other than the above!

Euro Boxes, you mean like BMW? BMWs all drive the water pump from the serpentine belt, unless the motor is equipped with v-belts, then the water pump is driven from one of them.
