Toyota Camry Oil Leak

I have a Toyota Camry 2003 with a 2.2 litre motor. The rings are brand new but the car uses a pint of oil per 400 kms. Drops of oil appear in a streak all along the length of the right hand side of the car. The car uses much less oil if I keep my travel speed below 110kms/hr. The current engine was recently replaced, which involved using part of the old engine. My specialist mechanic who also rebuilt the engine cannot find the source of the leak after many attempts, so the leak is not in any obvious place. Any ideas welcome.

That would seem to be a given.

I don't know how engine oil would get on the side of the car. What type of oil is on the side of the car?

There are several things to be checked when the engine is using oil.

Check the coolant for signs of oil mixing with the coolant, and check the oil for signs of coolant mixing with the oil.

Check the PCV hose for signs that oil is moving through the hose and into the intake.

Were the valve guide seals replaced when the engine work was performed?

Check the obvious places for external leaks, like camshaft and crankshaft seals (front and rear), valve cover gaskets, head gasket, oil pan gasket, oil pressure sender, oil filter.

If the oil is not leaking externally and it is not mixing with coolant, then it is being burned, either by leaking past the rings, valve guide seals, or PCV system. If the rings were installed incorrectly, excessive oil consumption can result.

The mere fact that the engine was rebuilt in this relatively new vehicle is suspect. Whoever owned this car prior to you has been neglecting it and there are bound to be many problems with it. Their choice of mechanic who built the engine and can't find a leak now is suspect also.

Drops of oil alongside the car would point towards a leaky valve cover seal or perhaps another problem, such as the CV joint flinging grease under the chassis and when warm it begins dripping. Does the brake line run along that side of the car?

Thanks to everyone who responded to the Camry oil leak post. Your ideas are much appreciated. I will post news and updates to this group, but said ideas will take at least 10 days to 2 weeks to be tried out, since the car is in a smallish town while the relevant workshops are an hour and a half=92s drive away, so I have to arrange time off work to take the car to the workshops.
