07 starting rpm's are high

Since this is my first Toyota I am not familiar with cold starts. On a cold start the engine's rpm's are at 1500 and it takes a good minute for them to drop to 1000 rpm's. Then after driving it the idle rpm's around

750. Is this normal on the 4 cly. My other car is a Chevy Aveo with a Suzuki engine and it does not do this but does idle up on cold starts for about 30 seconds then drops to normal idle.

It's the same with my camry 07 4cyl and Rav4 98 (previously owned)

What I normally do is let it run for a few seconds then drive slowly out of my apartment building and out of my block (another minute), I don't let the car stand still to warm up my engine, I think I'm wasting gas doing this. I dont think its harmfull since I don't speed up until I reach the main roads.

I have talked to a few people and that seems to be the consensus.

My 91 Camry does it too, don't seem able to tone it down. Volvo recommend warming the car up that way, it warms faster under light load.

that is normal

Backing out "slowly" is a good point. The rpm is so high that if I start to back out too soon, I feel like I'm being shot out of the garage from a cannon.

My wife's 05 Highlander Limited does the same thing and it is a V6.

1500rpm on a cold motor is to fast , your oil has not circulated yet, if enough pressure develops the bypass valve on the filter will open. At least put it in D to lower rpm till you fix it. Warm it should be near 600

It should be around 600rpm I dont know how to fix it but at 1500 rpm my car will do 45-50 mph. Rpms should be kept low till the motor is warm, just as the overdrive does not engauge till 110f, cold oil is hardest on a motor since it does not flow.

That's why the question is being asked, it's probably not good but is it normal and/or fixable? It seems to me it's normal (for Camrys), not fixable and not good.
