*2000 Solara Idle Problem Diagnosis - HELP!!!*

Hello,

On two separate occasions I've had an idling problem with my 2000 Solara - Once in late July 2004 and the second in early October. After highway driving the car for 45-90 minutes both times, when stopping at a light the idle would fall to 500, increase to 1000, then oscillate back and forth between these RPMs.

On the low RPM, I have to give it gas to keep it from stalling, and on the high end I have to apply more pressure to the brake to keep from moving. Both times, this continued for about 20 minutes, then stopped. Also, it doesn't seem to be related to how much gas is in the tank (1/8th 1st time, 7/8ths the 2nd), or to the weather (hot and humid, or mild and dry), so I'm really at a loss. I had a mechanic test drive it after the 1st time it happened, but the problem would not repeat while he drove it.

If someone could help me diagnose the problem, I would REALLY appreciate it!

Car History - 41K, Oil changed every 3K, Serviced as specified in the manual.

Thanks,

John
