The mechanic (dealership) said the noise in the front brakes was caused by too much dust in the rear brakes, causing the front to work harder. $24 to clean and adjust the rear brakes (25K miles). The front noise is still there. Any validity to what I just paid for?

Nope, problem is still there. Find another dealer. I have had my rear brakes cleaned twice in 169,000 miles! I would raise hell and get the front ones done for free... Its what they should have done the first time.
BS! The rear (disc anyhow) are self adjusting. Better than 75% of braking is done by the front discs. $24 is like 20 minutes of work - so they removed rear wheels and shot some brake cleaner in. Suspec noise in front is from pad dust on pads and behind pads -- sure they didn't just clean the front brakes? A can of $2.98 brake cleaner and you can do yourself.
The only adjustable brakes in the rear are the hand brakes, they are = manually adjusted only if the hand brake don't hold, they have nothing = to do with regular driving braking or the front brakes.
Jack.
