'88 Camry: O/D won't work until up to temp.

Its the 4cyl, I4 wagon. Trans. has been working perfect. Now the overdrive gear won't engage until the engine gets up to normal operating temp. I suspect it's when the control system is going closed-loop. It's not the O/D switch at all. Cycling it doesn't help at all. Just have to drive it revved up, and then just as soon as the temp gauge reaches normal temp, about mid- scale, it will automatically drop down into O/D gear. So I am wondering if there is some external circuit/control that could be the problem....and if so then might be repairable. If internal fault, then I just have to live with it. Thanks, Geronimo

It maybe the case that a solenoid or a hydraulic seal is only working once some heat has got into that part of the trans. Its not unusual for an old transmission, My old Ford has the original trans, its a '79 model, and it takes a long time to go into reverse when its hot. Thing is, its been like that for 10 yrs, and has not got worse, so try to live with the problemm in any case, some driving in 3rd until it warms up is not that bad an idea. Better to not labor a cold motor better for the pistons :-)

I thought that was the way they were designed to operate. It prevents the engine lugging until it is warm. My Camrys take a few blocks to get up to temperature, and then the overdrive drops in fine. Perhaps the thermostat is stuck open and the car is taking longer to warm up. John
