88 Camry Wagon...

ok, I had this left to me by my dearest friend in her will. I want to restore it as it gave us many years of trouble free service and I just plain love the size, style, handling and just about everything. Seems it misses her as stuff is starting to go all at once. Before I get to anything else I gotta get it starting dependably. All of a sudden it did'nt start all the time. First suspect was that stupid switch on the clutch pedal. Now I think it's the starter solanoid. Click, click, click, down behind the speedo, yup, where the starter is. Can ya get just a solanoid or do I have to go with a whole starter. Several sites show exactly the same offerings. Bet they're coming from one seller. Anyway, what's up with this....

BEFORE installing this starter, refer to Application Notice #B-37 in the Bosch reman catalog regarding updated design for the starter drive gear and possible damage to the ring gear teeth caused by the old-design starter drive gear.

low price is $100 for a bosch, then we get Advantex for 163 (never heard of em), then Denso for 170. Whatcha think? I found a motor at ToyotaPart.com which they claim is under 50k miles. Now, I gotta go for a starter, dunno bout the water pump, timing belt, etc. so I wonder if I'd be better off getting this engine or putting in seperate parts on the one in the car (170k on it, one mech said it was gettin ready to seize up, but that was about three years ago so I'm not really trustin that). Also the car smokes pretty good on start up so we know the valve seals/guides are pretty worn. I've seen where folks quote 1k for just a dam head rebuild/machine work (which seems INSANE). Body is in good shape or I would'nt be thinking of restoring as I've been there done that with body cancer project cars. I do have access to cheaper (used) parts from a friends salvage yards. Cept the current prob starter has their yellow stock number marking on it so I'm not really wanting to go there quite yet. They say they can get me an engine for 450 also. What makes these motors so dang expensive to overhaul? I had the motor in the Buick totally done (including valve inserts put IN, orig. did'nt have em) for under 700. V6. hope someone has some helpful advice as my back up vehicle is a 76 Chevy van with 350 an it eats about 10mpg. :) Tom
