91 Stalls & chokes at startup

Whenever I start up my car, it will occassionally stall. If I manage to keep it alive, it shudders when I hit the gas. Now I smell gas when I accelerate. Is this a fuel injection problem or is it my spark plugs? Or am I just an ignorant wench?

I have an '89 which is "pretty close". It could be an ignition or it could be a fuel problem. I'm betting you have sensor not working correctly. Where does the gas smell seem to be comming from -- the exhaust or from under the hood? If from under the hood, do you have a fire extinguisher handy? If not, get one. If from under the hood look for any obvious fuel leak. Do you have the original owners manual? If so, if it's like the '89, there is a section that will tell you how to read the trouble codes from the computer. It's easy, all you need is a piece of wire 1-2 inches long. If you don't have the manual ( or an aftermarket manual such as "Haynes" ) get back to me -- if you don't get help from someone else. Jim H.
