99 4cyl check engine light?

Code came up "bad evap" or something.

Mechanic reset it and said for starters we'd try a new gas cap. Tried that, light's back on.

What's next?

44k miles.

Thanks. Dean

Haynes and factory manuals give test procedure for checking associated vacuum lines. Should be under the "fuel and emission systems" section.

that,

The evap is reference to a canister which lives in the engine bay. Its function in life is to receive fuel vapours which buildup in the fuel tank. The engine inlet then sucks them in and burns them during overrun, thus getting rid of a 'potential enviromental hazard'. The engine inlet provides the suction needed to make the whole system work and it sounds like there is a vacuum leak in there somewhere including possibley the fuel-tack filling cap.

I dont know if you have noticed,..but on a warm day you can often hear a 'shwissssss' noise when you undo the gas-cap? Thats an indication the vapor recovery system is working well.
