YA can't check how much is worn out --- they deteriorate gradually so the original owner doesn't notice all at once. After 75k miles it is worth replacing them --- longer and the springs start to absorb the wear and become impacted. They greatly affect ride, handling, braking --- so its a safety issue. There are some graphs on internet that show typical drops in performance --- think they were at the Bilstein site. Bilstein claims (and I can back from experience) that even after 100k? miles their shocks retain well over something like 90%? of their original capability. A leaking or damaged strut should be replaced immediately --- and in pairs on the same axel. Pull up the dust boot to see if leaking.

Somewhat off topic for the Camry group, but couldn't help remembering the stock Bilsteins on a Mercedes I had - worked fine, solid damping, no leaks, good response in recovering from large bumps - some teenager at a Discount Tire Store, insisted to the point of his becoming angry with me, that due to mileage, they were worn and must be replaced for safety. I kept trying to tell him, kindly, that he didn't need to run that game on me, I knew they were still fine, but he kept insisting they were bad - with zero evidence to back it up.

I want to know if I have to detach the tires and other things to check the status of struts.
